In many ways, the role of the pastor in a Christian church service is similar to that of a teacher in a classroom setting. Both are expected to provide instruction and instructional materials (scripture, prayers, sermons, etc.) to the congregation members so that they can understand and apply God’s truths in their lives. Both are also expected to equip their students with the necessary skills and knowledge so that they can then apply those truths in their own lives. In fact, much of a pastor’s job description fits into one of three categories:

Instructor

The instructor role is the most obvious one. While the pastor is speaking, he or she is expected to be educating the congregation members, providing instruction that is based on scripture and other theological truths. This can be in the form of a sermon (explaining a particular Bible passage or theological concept), a series of sermons (explaining a topic in more detail than can be done in one sermon), a lesson (teaching an important Bible concept or idea), or any other instructional method.

Coach

The coach role is closely related to the instructor role because the instruction provided by the coach is based on a specific skill or set of skills that the students need to acquire and practice. In other words, instead of the instructor simply telling students what to do, the coach guides the students through an activity or exercises that help them master a particular skill.Coaching can take many forms. Here are a few examples of things that a pastor might do as a coach:

  • Help facilitate a small-group Bible study.

  • Teach a skill or set of skills to the congregation as a whole.

  • Help the congregation members set goals that will help them grow as Christians.

  • Help the church make plans for future events (conferences, retreats, etc.).

Conductor

The conductor role is closely related to the instructor and coach roles. Like the instructor and coach, the conductor provides instruction, but unlike the other two roles, the instruction provided is not directly tied to a specific skill or set of skills that the students need to acquire. Rather, the instruction provided by the conductor is more broad and general. It is instruction that is designed to provide a general overview of a particular topic or idea, or it may be instruction meant to help the congregation members understand and apply a particular Bible passage.
